Fiji's Interior Minister Criticizes Nuclear Power Plant Contaminated Water Discharge…"If it's safe, leave it in Japan"
"If the contaminated water is safe, why not put it in Japan?"
Fiji's Interior Minister Piotico Duadua publicly criticized Japan's marine discharge of radioactive material contaminated water at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant at an international conference.
According to the Asahi Shimbun on the 5th, Minister Tikodua participated in the "Security Order of the Sea" session, one of the 20th Asian Security Conference (Shangri-La Dialogue) programs held in Singapore on the 3rd with Japanese Defense Minister Yasuka Hamada.
At the meeting, Hamada, the defense minister, was asked about the problem of Fukushima's sewage treatment of contaminated water. Defense Minister Hamada replied, "We will confirm the safety by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and be evaluated by scientists from various countries, and then release it under the understanding of the international community."
After Hamada's defense minister's words, Minister Tikodua said, "Japan says the contaminated water is safe, so why not put it in Japan?" "When the contaminated water is released, it flows south at some point," he said. "We are very concerned."
Minister Tikoduadua appealed on the same day that the global environmental problems of the island country, which has been exposed to problems such as rising sea levels caused by climate change, are directly related to security.
Fiji is a member of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) created by 18 Pacific island countries. Pacific island countries have formed an independent advisory group consisting of experts in various fields such as nuclear physics, oceanography, and biology, and after a year of verification, they urged a "delay of discharge," saying the safety of contaminated water at the Fukushima nuclear power plant is uncertain.
Henry Puna, secretary-general of the Pacific Book Bureau Forum, also said at the Korea-Pacific Book Bureau Summit held in Seoul from the 28th to the 29th of last month, "There is a potential threat of nuclear pollution."
