[이집트] 기자의 스핑크스 스핑크스는 그리스 이름이고, 고대 이름은 세셉앙크(생명을 죽이다)이다. 현 아랍어로는 아부 훌(Abu-Hur)라 하는데 공포의 아버지란 뜻이다. 하나의 돌을 다듬어 형상을 조각하였는데, 몸은 사자이고 머리는 파라오의 형상이다. 사자는 힘을 파라오는 지혜를 상징한다. 꼬리에서 앞발까지 72m, 높이 20m, 얼굴의 길이만 4m이다. 카프라 피라미드 동쪽 방향에 위치하여 카프라왕의 스핑크스라 부른다. 스핑크스 얼굴은 많이 파괴된 것을 알 수 있다. 1799년 프랑스 나폴레옹의 병사들이 군사 훈련 목적으로 스핑크스 코를 표적으로 대포를 쏘아서 파괴하였다고 하고, 또 다른 설은 이집트 이슬람 교도들이 스핑크스를 우상이라 하여 인공으로 눈 코 입술만 파괴하였다 한다. 스핑크스 앞 발 가운데 화강암 돌비석이 서 있..
