[영국] 웹워쓰 세인트안드레교회 올드 랙토리 촬영을 마친 일행은 사무엘이 목회했던 세인트 안드레 처치(St Andrew's Church)로 발걸음을 옮겼다. 사제관 창문을 통해 보았을 때 꽤 멀어 보였던 교회는 막상 걸어보니 15분이 채 걸리지 않았다. 세인트 안드레교회는 나지막한 언덕 위에 있었고, 오르막길은 좌우에 아름드리 가로수와 허리 높이의 가로등, 이름 모를 노란 꽃이 어우러진 호젓한 산책로 같았다. 13세기에 세워진 석조건축물에서는 중후함과 함께 오랜 풍상을 견디어낸 인내의 냄새가 풍겨났다. 예배당을 둘러친 안전망에 붙어있는 팻말과 건물 바로 옆에 즐비하게 늘어선 이끼 낀 묘비들이 풍기는 음산함은 이방인인 나에겐 낯설게만 느껴졌다. 3백 명쯤 앉을 수 있을 것 같은 예배실에는 서너 명의 인부들이 낡은 벽면을 뜯어내고 있었다...
[영국] 웹워쓰 올드렉토리 존 웨슬리의 고향 영국 링컨주에 있는 ‘웹워쓰’는 마치 마을 전체가 존 웨슬리의 박물관인양 이곳저곳에 그와 관련된 유적과 내용을 담은 안내판이 세워져 있다. 영문으로 'Epworth'라고 쓰는 이 지명이 소리 내서 읽으면 읽을수록 친숙하게 느껴지는 것은 왤까? 초기한국감리교회사에 종종 등장하는 발음하기도 뻑뻑한 '엡웟청년회'때문이었을까. 선교사들의 권유로 탄생한 '엡웟청년회'(Epworth League, 현 기독교대한감리회청년회)의 ‘엡웟’(Epworth)은 존 웨슬리의 출생지인 바로 이곳의 지명을 딴 것이 맞다. 그 뜻이 "하나님의 은혜로 자라남"이라하니 청년회의 이름으로 나쁘지는 않은 것 같다. 엡워쓰에는 존 웨슬리의 생가이며, 아버지인 사무엘이 죽던 1735년까지 가족들이 살았던 올드 랙토리(Old Rectory)로..
